Well he did say put into remission. UC can go into remission quite quickly which of course isn't a cure.
If it stays in remission and the bowel entirely returns to normal you could call that a cure.

I believe UC is caused more by a weak and deranged immune response rather than unbalanced gut flora which is also common in people with no bowel disease. That doesn't help of course

It may seem unlikely but best not write things off until you've tried them.

Another way to repair the immune response is to take mega doses of vitamin D. Meaning up to 30,000 IU a day with blood testing to get it up to 80 to 100 ng/ml and lower doses to hold it there

This could help all cases of UC or crohns and can't be overlooked. Diet plays a big part too of course for reducing inflammation
