It's your bodies reaction that causes the ulcerative colitis symptoms. Immune system disorder and whatever is responsible for that. Glandular problems, nutritional deficiencies etc. Diet is partly responsible as are drugs and the state of your digestive system. Getting pathogens out of the way is only a temporary solution if a solution at all. Even normal bacterial contents of the bowel can cause problems if everything else isn't addressed.
