One of my hobbies is Hebrew, and the insight it gives to the scriptures.
A bit of background: I'm the daughter of a Baptist minister, but in my quest for truth I abandoned these roots for those more Judaic. My ultimate goal was to understand what the scriptures really meant to the common man during the time period in which they were written. It helps a lot that my boss is a Hebrew scholar with extensive work on ancient manuscripts. :o)
The word translated as angel is MaLAK and means messenger. It is my personal belief that all messengers/angels are human.
The word translated as spirit is RuWaCh, basically meaning breath. A person is a soul (NePheSh- that which breathes) because we have spirit/RuWaCh/breath.
I'm pretty concrete and literal in my understanding of these words/concepts, so if they don't jive with others that may be why.
