Re: I am starting Sheldon's Method 7/13/2006
How did this go? I ask because I am starting Sheldon's method tonight January 3, 2008. I am a 36 y.o. male and was diagnosed with UC back in 1991. I refused to take cortico steroids and stopped taking the Sulfasalazine after a month because I was continually nauseated and photosensitive.
I stopped dairy products except for yogurts and some cheese here and there and exercised regularly. I was also diagnosed with degenerative disc disease in 1993 and definitely feel there is a link.
Anyway, except for some IB-like symptoms during times of stress through the years I had been free of any real UC symptoms since 1993. I exercise, (gym and yoga) eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and am VERY healthy and energetic for my age. Fruit never seemed to affect me as it did Sheldon.
Then a couple of months ago, after a very stressful year (which continues), I noticed mucous in my stool. No cramping or bleeding, so I figured I would just monitor what was going on. I dropped ALL wheat consumption and now eat only rice, corn and oats for carbohydrates. I've never been a big meat eater but have since stopped eating the occasional steak or chicken and have taken to soy with occasional fish and legumes.
My situation however, worsened rapidly; and within 3 weeks, my UC was as bad as it was 16 years ago with many bowl movements only resulting in gas, mucous and blood. When there is stool, it is 90% formless.
I removed fruit and juices (*sob*) and am now only eating cooked and raw veggies, soy, oats, rice, and some corn carbs (tortillas and corn flakes). The painful cramping subsided along with the instances of urgency, however the urgency, though occurring less often still exists, again resulting in the movements mentioned above.
So tonight, I start Sheldon's enema procedure with (10) 400IU capsules worth of TocopherOL (not YL - as the removed oxygen atom prevents bonding with organic materials) and 1.5 TBSP of distilled water.
I will keep everyone posted on my progress.
