You might not anticipate all the things you need to buy when you first move into a new home. After all, you haven't been living an ascetic life all this time. You have bought and accumulated things and functioned adequately with them.

However, chances are that your new house will be much bigger than where you were living before. That means that you need more things to fill them up. You may also have repairs that you are responsible for and outdoor space that you need to maintain, which may be a change. You need the proper tools to take care of these things. Here is a guide to the things you will need to acquire as you move into your first new home.

Functioning Appliances

The big appliances, e.g., the refrigerator, washing machine, stove, etc., typically come with the house. However, some may not be in the best shape, and you may want to upgrade in cases where the appliances are still serviceable but a little outdated. However, don't go shopping for a new Hoshizaki refrigerator or ice machine until after you close on the house. Any big purchases that you make before closing could show up on your credit report, and the deal could fall through at the last minute. Then you'll be stuck with a big appliance and nowhere to install it.

Clothes Hangers

If you're lucky, your new home offers you a lot more closet space. This means that you can hang up clothes that you might have folded before. The downside of this is that the number of hangers you have now may not be adequate, and until you get more, you won't be able to take full advantage of your closet space. Fortunately, basic hangers are pretty inexpensive, allowing you to stock up on what you need and have a few extra for when company comes to call.

Light Bulbs

The previous owners probably didn't go to the effort of buying brand new bulbs for every fixture in the house. This isn't because they wanted to inconvenience you but because they probably didn't think of it. It's easy to take light bulbs for granted until they burn out. They are probably all functioning now because that is something the previous owner and realtor would have checked before they started showing the house. However, the bulbs may be on their last legs. Another scenario is that you may want to replace them with something more energy-efficient. Either way, light bulbs should be on your new home shopping list.

Garbage Cans

When you live in a small apartment, you can usually get along with just one or two garbage cans, maybe three at most. However, now that you own a whole house, you find that you have more rooms in which to place garbage cans or wastepaper baskets. Otherwise, you'll find yourself wandering all over the house looking for a place to dispose of small pieces of refuse.

Not only are you now responsible for home repairs, but you'll also have to install and assemble a lot of new equipment. Having a basic tool kit stocked with necessities means that you can handle most minor tasks yourself, even if you still want to hire help for the major ones.

Some things can be replaced as you move in. In other cases, however, you may find that you just need more of what you already have.
